Getting the perfect haircut starts with clear communication. Here's how to make sure you and your barber are on the same page every time.
Before Your Appointment
Find Reference Photos
Pictures are worth a thousand words. Find 2-3 photos of haircuts you like. Pro tip: look for photos of people with similar hair type and face shape to yours.
Know the Terminology
- Guard numbers: #1 (1/8"), #2 (1/4"), #3 (3/8"), #4 (1/2")
- Fade types: Low, mid, high, skin/bald
- Top length: Finger length, 2 inches, 3 inches, etc.
- Texture: Textured, scissor cut, blended
During the Consultation
Be Specific
Instead of "shorter on the sides," say "I want a mid fade starting at a #1 at the bottom." The more specific, the better.
Explain Your Lifestyle
Tell your barber how you typically style your hair, how much time you spend on it daily, and if you have any upcoming events.
Discuss What Didn't Work
If your last haircut had issues, explain what you didn't like. "Last time the sides grew out too fast" tells your barber to go shorter.
During the Haircut
Speak Up Early
If something doesn't look right, say something before it's too late. A good barber welcomes feedback.
Stay Off Your Phone
Keep your head still and pay attention. Your barber needs you to hold steady for precision work.
After the Cut
Ask Questions
Ask what products were used, how to style it at home, and when you should come back.
Take Photos
If you love it, take photos to show your barber next time (or show a different barber if you're traveling).
Give Feedback
Let your barber know what you think. They want you to leave happy and feedback helps them serve you better next time.
